Design: Utagawa Kunisada, 1861

Karigane Bunshichi was the leader of the most famous Gang of Five and was condemned and executed in 1702. He is portrayed here by the actor Sawamura Tanosuke III (1845–1878). The wild goose (kari) on his costume indicates the name of his role. Tanosuke III enjoyed great acclaim in his youth and by the age of 15 had risen to become the leading interpreter of female roles (tate onnagata) in the Morita Theatre. Although he had to have an arm and a leg amputated in 1867, he continued to act.
