The print shows the actor Kawarazaki Gonjuro I (1839–1903) in the role of the bandit Kyokuin Sen’emon.
Bandit stories were called shiranami mono in the kabuki theatre. Shiranami (translated: white waves) refers to the Chinese “Valley of the White Waves” which was said at one time to have offered refuge to Chinese bandits. In Japan, the genre was much influenced by Shorin Hakuen II, who wrote many of these bandit stories
