This publication was published for an eponymous exhibition shown by and conceptualized especially for the MAK (12.12.2007–11.5.2008), the hitherto largest and most comprehensive museum presentation of the work of this team of architects operating worldwide and running offices in Vienna and Los Angeles.

One special feature is the documentation of the exhibition design developed by COOP HIMMELB(L)AU. It reflects both continuity and variety in the formal vocabulary of the architects' comprehensive oeuvre developed over forty years. The vaired and diverse selection includes recent urban-planning projects such as BMW Welt, Munich (2001–2007), Musée des Confluences, Lyon (2001–2010), and the European Central Bank, Frankfurt am Main (2003–2011). Photographs, renderings, plans, and drawing provide readers with in-depth information about projects unrealized and relized as well as still in planning.

Edited by Peter Noever. Textual contributions by Jeffrey Kipnis, Sylvia Lavin, and Peter Noever indicate overlaps between architecture and history, literature, film, and visual art in the work of COOP HIMMELB(L)AU. Programmatic and project texts by COOP HIMMELB(L)AU provide a profound insight into the conceptual approach of the architects who count among the most innovative and significant of our time.
