Shunga (spring pictures) have long been prevalent in East Asia and bear witness to an attitude towards sex and eroticism that differs from that in Europe. All of the great Japanese ukiyo-e artists created erotic images, which&mdashthough banned by the government&mdashwere sold privately and unsigned, and accounted for over 30 percent of the market. Shunga are part of the highly developed popular culture of Japan.

Published for the exhibition of the same title (12.10.2016–5.3.2017) at the MAK.

Edited by Christoph Thun-Hohenstein and Johannes Wieninger, with texts by Susanne Klien, Diethard Leopold, Sepp Linhart, Christoph Thun-Hohenstein, Johannes Wieninger.

The catalog contains explicit erotic depictions that might be offensive to the moral sensibility of persons under 16 years of age.
